Description Job Title: Seasonal Grounds Horticulturist FLSA Status: Non-exempt Classification: Seasonal Hours: 6:00 AM - 3:00 PM; Monday - Friday with occasional evening or weekend hours Pay Rate: $16.41/hour This is a seasonal position with a maximum duration of six months, based on individual performance and business operations. The exact end date will be determined by the official start date. Summary: Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is seeking a Seasonal Grounds Horticulturist. Under the direct supervision of the Horticulture Grounds Supervisor and Lead, this position is a general grounds maintenance position with a primary responsibility of turf and landscape management. Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to) : Provide manual labor in turf management at the Zoo including mowing, weed trimming and manual weed control. Weekly watering on non-irrigated areas, fertilization, pest, disease and weed management as directed. Provide manual labor for the care and maintenance of all trees, shrubs and perennials in Rosenblatt Zone. Provide manual labor in support of other areas on the horticulture depart as necessary. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Experience in commercial landscape maintenance. Possession of a current and valid drivers license is required upon employment. Experience in operating commercial mowing, trimming, and general maintenance equipment. Identification on the most common species of trees, shrubs and perennials. General knowledge of the most common species of trees, shrubs and perennials. Familiar with common pest, disease and weed identification. Understanding basic record keeping. Nebraska pesticide applicators license is a plus. Horticulture degree is a plus. Working Conditions and Physical Effort: Work is normally performed in an outside work environment and in all types of weather. Physical effort required including the ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This position may require flexible hours to accommodate the campus environment with minimal disruption to our guests.
