Job Description:
Summary GENERAL SUMMARY: Performs high complexity medical
laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses to provide data for
diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease as part of the on
the job clinical experience for the MLT or MLS career ladder.
PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. *Commits to the mission, vision,
beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 2. *Under
the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment
(CLIA)-designated General Supervisor (Medical Laboratory
Scientist), performs laboratory testing according to laboratory
standards, policies and procedures in a timely thorough manner. 3.
*Assists with development and validation processes for MLT I
competencies. 4. *Assists with clinical decision-making and
interpretation of established procedures. 5. *Provides direction to
MLT I and serves as clinical resource. 6. *Analyzes test results
and enters data into the computer using laboratory standards,
policies, and procedures. 7. *Performs and analyzes quality control
measures to ensure accurate clinical data. Analyzes unacceptable
quality control results and troubleshoots shifts or trends as
necessary. 8. *Maintains competency and proficiency on all
laboratory instrumentation and procedures; performs and documents
preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment,
troubleshooting problems as necessary. Notifies immediate
supervisory personnel of equipment/instrument issues and calls
Service regarding issues. 9. *Communicates with coworkers, clients
and leadership by transmitting patient cart testing and results,
appropriate ideas, information and opinions clearly, concisely and
courteously; maintains employee, patient, client and corporate
confidentiality. 10. *Performs general housekeeping tasks to
maintain safe work environment; maintains adequate supplies in the
work area. 11. *Assists in training new employees, students,other
technical staff and support staff. 12. *Works collaboratively with
all laboratory staff to ensure completion of testing and
communication of necessary information to assist testing
completion. 13. Uses quality improvement processes, programs or
outcomes to help improve department operations; assists with LEAN
projects. 14. Performs service excellence must-haves to achieve an
excellent patient/customer experience. 15. Basic knowledge in
phlebotomy and phlebotomy procedures and ability to perform
phlebotomy if required by laboratory facility. 16. Maintains
professional growth and development through seminars, workshops,
and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in
field of expertise. 17. Participates in meetings, committees and
department projects as assigned. 18. Performs other related
projects and duties as assigned. (Essential Job functions are

work-specific differences as needed. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND
ABILITIES: 1. Knowledge gained as a Specimen Processing Technician
2 of clinical laboratory equipment/instrumentation, test procedures
and standards. 2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and
software applications relevant to work functions. 3. Skill gained
during on the job clinical training in the use and preventative
maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment. 4. Ability to
work with mathematical concepts and apply such concepts to
practical situations. 5. Ability to read and interpret documents
such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and
procedure manuals. 6. Ability to solve practical problems and deal
with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only
limited standardization exists and engage critical thinking skills.
7. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
8. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.
9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff. 10.
Ability to work as a team member. 11. Ability to maintain
confidentiality relevant to sensitive information. 12. Ability to
prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision. 13.
Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. EDUCATION AND
EXPERIENCE: Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or
related laboratory science from a two-year accredited college or
CLIA- approved Military MLT program required or has earned a
Bachelors degree in a chemical, physical or biological science
meeting American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) criteria for
MLT certification and with the 2 years of required clinical
experience for ASCP certification. ASCP certification as an MLT
(ASCP) or equivalency preferred. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Physical
Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human
Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.) (DOT)
Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds
of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently,
and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force
constantly to move objects. *Must be able to distinguish and
discriminate between colors.
