To learn more about our dynamic, stable and growing company, visit POSITION SUMMARY: Performs quality and safety testing of incoming ingredients, in-process and finished products. The Quality Assurance Lab Technician also supports the quality assurance programs. Directly reports to the Quality Assurance Manager for proper direction, interpretation, and evaluation. Maintains and guarantees Balchem Corporation's quality and safety standards. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare samples for analysis in outside laboratories; maintain sample inventory of raw and finished samples
  • Perform other in-house testing and maintain database of all data, i.e., moisture analysis, allergen testing, granulation, flake thickness, bulk density, salt assays, vitamin analysis, etc.
  • Carry out and maintain the environmental and water quality testing programs
  • Generate and maintain all required Certificates of Analysis
  • Maintain and clean research and development (R&D)/quality assurance laboratory and assist with R&D products
  • Maintain the verification and calibration programs for all analytical instruments (laboratory only)
  • Maintain laboratory inventory, equipment, programs
  • Maintain Product Evaluation System (PES) program
  • Generate and continuously update product testing calendar and outgoing testing log
  • Support HACCP coordination in conducting monthly meetings; assist in generating monthly food safety and food quality statistics and monthly HACCP minutes
  • Observe safety and security procedures, determine appropriate action beyond guidelines, and report potentially unsafe conditions
  • Monitor and maintain product quality to meet company standards; report to Manager any deviation from quality that may become a potential liability
  • Consistently be on time to work, meetings, and training sessions
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications and establishing personal networks
  • Attend all Company-sponsored training events, i.e., safety training talks and monthly training sessions, targeted for continuing personal growth and development
  • Report to your Manager any failure to adhere to Balchem's work ethics and standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Quality Assurance Manager
  • Will report circumstances, allegations, complaints, or actions that suggest impropriety or a violation of any federal, state, or city law/ordinance including issues of discrimination, harassment, or violent behavior to the Manager, Rick Williams, or Equal Opportunity Officer
  • Adhere to all Company policies and procedures, i.e. personnel, safety, and equipment maintenance and upkeep
  • Become proficient in areas of production and safety policies and procedures (accident/injury reporting, blood-borne pathogens, confined spaces, emergency evacuation, equipment operation/maintenance, hazard communication, ladders, lockout/tag out, personal protective equipment, etc.) REQUIREMENTS:
    • Four-year degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, or related field is required
    • Lab experience is required, and food-handling experience is desirable
    • HACCP knowledge and understanding preferred
    • Must have sound analytical and technical skills
    • Must be able to organize a meeting and lead a group
    • Individual must be equipped with strong motivation, organization, time management, documentation, and communication skills (both orally and written)
    • Must have excellent attention to detail and the ability to multi-task and prioritize
    • Demonstration of strong work ethics (dependable, and trustworthy)
    • Ability to utilize common sense and skills in completing responsibilities and operating equipment conforming to company production, personnel, and safety procedures
    • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, as well as other correspondence
    • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization
    • Must be able to communicate and handle conflict in a professional manner
    • Ability to give and welcome feedback and contribute to building a positive team spirit WORKING CONDITIONS:
      • Individual will continually be required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, to talk and hear, and to utilize specific vision abilities including but not limited to close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
      • Regularly required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl, using proper ergonomic principles, taste, smell, and lift up to 25 pounds
      • Periodically required to lift up to and above 50 and 100 pounds, utilizing safe and proper lift techniques and equipment
      • Individual will rarely be required to sit
      • Individual will operate equipment, including but not limited to computers, drafting equipment and instruments involving scientific meters and measuring devices
      • The ability to distinguish colors is required
      • Balchem Corporation requires anyone working in the plant or entering the plant to adhere to the personal protective equipment policies and procedures
      • All personal protective equipment furnished must be worn by all employees when required or needed to perform proper and safe working conditions
      • Individual may rarely be exposed to wet or humid conditions, working near moving mechanical parts, work in extreme heat (non-weather), work in high noise levels and vibration
      • Individual may also be periodically working in high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, and extreme cold (non-weather) #IN
