Summary
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Responsible for administering anesthesia, monitoring patients vital
signs, and overseeing patient recovery from anesthesia. Assists
with anesthesia-related medical and emergency situations such as
airway maintenance and pulmonary ventilation. Complies with rules
and regulations of all applicable federal, state, and local laws as
well as all Grand Island Regional Medical Center (GIRMC) policies
and Medical Staff rules and regulations.
PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently
demonstrates our core values.
2. *Maintains excellence in airway management and is familiar with
the usage of all airway adjunct (i.e., Glideslope, fiberoptic
scope, intubating laryngeal mask airway (ILMA), etc.).
3. *Functions within their scope of delineated clinical privileges
and within the State of Nebraskas scope of practice.
4. *Participates in pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation
including the preparation of anesthesia equipment and supplies
anticipated for the procedure, performing a pre-anesthetic
assessment and developing a specific anesthesia plan of care for
each patient and or procedure.
5. *Formulates the patient specific anesthesia plan of care
utilizing the pre-surgical assessment and collaborates with the
attending anesthesiologist for patients with multiple compounding
medical problems or when the anesthetic is anticipated to be
challenging.
6. *Executes the patient-specific plan for anesthesia care
including always maintaining the appropriate confidentiality of
patient information.
7. Reviews appropriate documentation for informed consent and
identifies appropriate surgical site in accordance with
departmental and regulatory compliance standards. Participates in
surgical pause in the Operating Room (OR) with entire surgical team
in accordance with departmental and regulatory compliance
standards.
8. Ensures appropriate non-invasive and invasive monitoring devices
for continuous evaluation of the patients physical status are
selected, applied, and/or inserted.
9. Uses anesthetics, adjuvant and accessory drugs and fluids
necessary to manage the anesthetic.
10. Implements, monitors, and adjusts patients physiologic
condition as appropriate for type of anesthesia and specific
patients needs.
11. *Monitors the patients physical response to the anesthetic and
initiates corrective measures. Monitors airway, oxygenation, and
pulmonary status; cardiovascular status; and temperature and
neuromuscular function.
12. *Accesses positioning and adjusts as needed for patient
safety.
13. *Provides emergence and recovery from anesthesia.
14. *Determines the need for additional laboratory tests and
provides resuscitative care, as necessary.
15. Transfers the responsibility for care of the patient to other
qualified providers post-operatively to ensure continuity of care
and patient safety. Communicates appropriately with all individuals
involved in the peri-operative and post-operative care of the
patient. Reports and completed documentation are provided upon
transfer of the patient from intraoperative to post-operative care
provider.
16. Provides acute and chronic post-operative pain management
modalities. Select medications, fluids and ventilatory support
necessary to facilitate recovery from anesthesia.
17. Provides post anesthesia follow-up evaluation and care as
needed.
18. Responds to emergency situations, anywhere in the hospital,
immediately and competently by providing airway management and
using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques as
appropriate.
19. Performs all required safety and performance checks on
anesthesia-related equipment and verifies the appropriate supplies
are available before initiating care. Procures and assembles
equipment and supplies as indicated as needed.
20. *Assumes responsibility and is accountable for controlled
substances according to department and hospital policy and State
and federal guidelines.
21. Participates in the quality assessment process by collecting
data, reporting trends/compliance, attending committee meetings,
departmental reviews, problem focused studies and process oversight
as assigned.
22. Participates as an interdepartmental liaison by interfacing
with other departments such as nursing, surgery, obstetrics,
post-anesthesia care units, outpatient surgery, admissions,
administration, laboratory, pharmacy, etc., as appropriate.
23. Responsible for personal professional development and
contributes to and assists others with professional development by
sharing information learned through individual professional
development. Participates in the education process by clinical or
didactic teaching, providing in-services, supervising residents and
medical students, as well as assisting with the teaching and
evaluation of newly hired certified registered nurse anesthetist
(CRNA), graduate registered nurse anesthetist (GRNA), and student
registered nurse anesthetist (SRNA), in the clinical area.
24. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars,
workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest
trends in field of expertise.
25. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as
assigned.
26. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including
but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patients
growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency
verification and mandatory education and competencies.
2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software
applications relevant to work functions.
3. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in
writing.
4. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired
outcomes.
5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.
6. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical
thinking skills.
7. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive
information.
8. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal
supervision.
9. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Masters degree in Nurse Anesthesia required. Current Registered
Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact
state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act
required. Licensure as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in
the State of Nebraska required.
OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:
Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health
recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare
professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals)
and the Military Training Network.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life
Support (PALS) required.
