Assistant Food Service Director Columbus Public Schools

As Assistant Food Service Director you will partner closely with the "Food Service Director" provided by the food service management company while serving as a leader and point person to our staff, administration, and students. You will have a daily impact on all elements of the operation, including food safety, regulatory compliance, as well as student/staff, public, vendor and employee relations.
Preferred candidates will have:

  • Previous commercial or school food service management experience
  • Understanding of nutritional and culinary planning and preparation
  • Ability to lead staff in positive, supportive manner and supportive of District goals
  • A commitment to professional growth, training, and developing an understanding of working with entities supporting our Food Service program (ie: USDA, NDE, etc.)
  • The capability and willingness to take both direction and coaching while remaining open and responding positively to change
  • Excellent people and communication skills
  • Ability to use technology including, but not limited to, web-browser, e-mail, word, spreadsheets, or other online applications.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills General Responsibilities:
    • Work collaboratively with the Food Service Director as necessary related to:
      • Menu planning
      • Employee work assignments, evaluations, training, and supervision
      • Procurement and repair of necessary supplies and equipment
      • Preparation of reports required by the food service management company, CPS, or supporting agency
      • Delivery of the food service program to Columbus Public Schools, including those programs or events outside of the normal breakfast and lunch programs.
      • Schedule, coordinate, and supervise logistics of meal delivery
      • Rotate as server, cook, cashier, etc. throughout the District to better understand the roles, responsibilities, and needs of the food service department and provide feedback on needs to your District Supervisor. This is not a full-time desk/supervisory position.
      • Serve as the Direct supervisor of Kitchen Managers
      • Serve as the liaison between building administrators and the food service program
      • Provide communication and feedback to food service employees, building administrators, and Superintendent when asked.
      • Assist in the review, interviewing, and hiring of food service employees.
      • Serve as the Direct Supervisor/Coordinator of the Summer Food Program
        • Provide necessary invoices and documentation for the accounts payable department related to purchases of supplies and equipment that will be owned by CPS.
        • Work collaboratively with the District office in completing food service applications for programs the Districts offers through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and Summer Food Program (SFP) annually.
        • Ensure money handling, fiscal reporting, and other procedures are followed to ensure transparency, accountability, and following of CPS guidelines and policies.
        • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or Director of Finance/Human Resources. Wage, Benefit, and Work Calendar:
          • 225 Days (our hourly full-time equivalent) to be worked during a 12-Month period beginning August 12th and ending August 11th annually.
          • Approximate breakdown of days
            • 10 training, planning, and preparation days
            • 40 summer food program serving days
            • 175 student serving days
            • Full-Time, 8 hours a day when meals are served to students, training, planning, or duties that require the assistant director to be in attendance.
            • Hourly rate depending on experience and education to be between $22-$25 per hour with annual increases.
